Blueberries for us
Blueberry season is here—yea! A friend and I have been going to pick blueberries at The Berry Patch since our girls were two, and this was the best year yet. Cool and cloudy, no crowds and bushes loaded with berries. Western Missouri and eastern Kansas were once thick with u-pick farms, but there are few left thanks to any number of reasons: expanding exurbs, cheap imported fruits and vegetables, difficulties keeping city pickers safe and happy and the vagaries of varmints and weather to name a few. But perhaps the local food movement will turn the tide? A recent search of PickYourOwn.org turned up more farms than I’d expected. The Kansas City Food Circle, AgriMissouri Buyer’s Guide and Simply Kansas are also great sources for local foods. Happy harvesting!
